Treatment Of Indian Wrestlers Was "Very Disturbing": IOC

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has condemned the manner in which the protesting Indian wrestlers were being treated by Delhi Police over the weekend, terming it "very disturbing" in a strongly-worded statement. The IOC's reaction follows the United World Wrestling's (UWW) criticism of the detention of the grapplers during their protest at Jantar Mantar, in which the sport's world body threatened to suspend the national federation if it fails to hold its election within the stipulated time.

The top wrestlers -- Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sangeeta Phogat -- have accused the Wrestling Federation of India's (WFI) outgoing president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual exploitation.

"The treatment of the Indian wrestling athletes over the weekend was very disturbing. The IOC insists that the allegations by the wrestlers are followed up on by an unbiased, criminal investigation in line with local law," the IOC said in the statement.

"We understand that a first step towards such a criminal investigation has been made, but more steps have to follow before concrete actions become visible. We urge that the safety and wellbeing of these athletes is duly considered throughout this process and that this investigation will be speedily concluded." Unprecedented scenes of police dragging Olympic and World Championships medallists, including Sakshi, Vinesh, Bajrang and Sangeeta, were witnessed when the wrestlers and their supporters breached the security cordon during their march towards the new Parliament building for the planned women's 'Mahapanchayat' on Sunday.

The wrestlers are demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan for allegedly sexually harassing several women wrestlers, including a minor.

The IOC further said in its statement, "From the very beginning of the allegations, the IOC has been in close contact with United World Wrestling (UWW), which has already taken measures.

"The IOC supports UWW as the competent sporting authority to address this issue as it pertains to the governance of the sport of wrestling in India. We have been informed by UWW that the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is currently not in charge.

"The IOC will continue to support UWW in all their efforts and in the framework of the IOC Guidelines for International Federations and NOCs for safeguarding athletes from harassment and abuse in sport." The IOC asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to take the necessary actions "to protect the athletes and to make sure that the elections of WFI are happening as planned and in line with the regulations of UWW as an International Federation".

The wrestlers had called for a women's Mahapanchayat at the new Parliament building at a time when it was being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Expressing its disappointment over the "lack of results of the investigations so far", the UWW on Tuesday said that the sports body will hold a meeting with the wrestlers to inquire about their condition and safety.

Regarding the WFI elections, wrestling's international governing body said in its statement, "... UWW will request further information about the next elective general assembly from the IOA and the Ad-hoc Committee of the WFI. The 45-day deadline that was initially set to hold this elective assembly shall be respected.

"Failing to do so may lead UWW to suspend the federation, thereby forcing the athletes to compete under a neutral flag. It is reminded that UWW already took a measure in this situation by reallocating the Asian Championship planned in New Delhi earlier this year." On April 27, a two-member ad-hoc committee was formed to run the day-to-day affairs of WFI and also conduct the elections. It has been 34 days since, leaving the body with just 11 days to hold the polls.

British Man, 26, Dies From Lightning Strike While Paddleboarding In Greece

A 26-year-old British tourist died after he was reportedly hit by lightning while paddleboarding in Greece, as per Guardian.  The unnamed man was in the sea during a thunderstorm in Agia Agathi, Rhodes, as his girlfriend filmed him from the beach, according to local media.

Greek newspaper Rodiaki reported that lightning struck the water near the man shortly before 1.30 pm local time on Tuesday, causing him to fall into the water injured.

Soon after the incident, emergency services dashed to the scene, and the man was taken to the shore. Rescuers frantically tried to save his life, following which medics took him to a local hospital before he was declared dead.

Though the Port Authority of Rhodes confirmed the man's age and that he was a British national, they gave no further information.

An investigation is now underway into the incident.

A spokesperson said, ''This is an active case so we cannot give more details at the moment.''

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said, 'We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Rhodes and is in contact with local authorities.''

"M5 Dhoni": How IPL Franchises Reacted To CSK's Record-Equalling Title Win

Chennai Super Kings clinched their fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) title after defeating Gujarat Titans in a last-ball thriller at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Thanks to this victory, they are now tied with Mumbai Indians as the most successful franchise in the history of the competition. It was also the fifth win for MS Dhoni as skipper - a feat that only Rohit Sharma has achieved. The match faced several rain interferences but CSK were able to keep their calm and with 10 runs needed from the final two balls of the match, Ravindra Jadeja stepped up to the occasion and finished it in style.

It was a thrilling end to IPL 2023 which saw the most number of 200+ scores by the sides and a surprising number of high-score chases. In the aftermath of CSK's victory, all franchises took to Twitter to congratulate the winners and hail the brilliance of MS Dhoni for securing another title for his side.

Dhoni also dropped a major update regarding his potential retirement at the post-match presentation.

"If you circumstantially if you see it's the best time to announce the retirement. The easy thing for me to say is thank you and retire. But the hard thing to do is to work hard for nine months and try to play one more IPL season. The body has to hold up. But with the amount of love I have received from CSK fans, it would be a gift for them to play one more season. The way they have shown their love and emotion, it is something I need to do for them," said Dhoni told Harsha Bhogle during the ceremony.

"It is the last part of my career. It started over here and the full house was chanting my name. It was my same thing in Chennai, but it will be good to come back and play whatever I can. The kind of cricket I play, they feel they can play that cricket. There is nothing orthodox about it and I like to keep it simple."

Alleged Sexual Harassment At Delhi's UP Bhavan, Officials Suspended

A woman has alleged that she has been sexually assaulted at the Uttar Pradesh Bhavan, the state guest house in the heart of Delhi. After a case was filed by the Delhi Police, several officials have been suspended and a room where the incident allegedly took place, has been sealed, sources said.

The accused, Rajyavardhan Singh Parmar, is the national president of an organisation called Maharana Pratap Sena, sources said.

Sources said the man came to UP Bhavan with the woman on May 26 around 12.15 pm. He was allotted a room and left the place at 1.50.

The woman later lodged a complaint at the Chanakyapuri police station, alleging that she was sexually exploited by Rajyavardhan Singh Parmar.

Security cameras from the building showed the man and woman inside the building. The room where they stayed at the UP Bhavan, room number 122, has been sealed ahead of forensic tests.

The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a departmental inquiry.

Three officials posted at the UP Bhavan have been suspended.

Sources said they had allotted a room to the accused even though he is not eligible to book a room. Government guest houses in the national capital usually host government employees.

Rajyavardhan Singh Parmar had claimed that he was booking the room for a government officer and wanted to see it before taking a call, sources said.

The Delhi Police said the allegations are being investigated.

Thousands Evacuated From Canadian City Amid "Incredibly Serious" Wildfire

A wildfire in the eastern Canadian city of Halifax led to mandatory evacuation orders for thousands of homes, with officials saying residents are not allowed to return until advised by municipal authorities.

Halifax Mayor Mike Savage said about 18,000 people were impacted by evacuations.

The evacuation orders issued Sunday cover areas of Hammonds Plains, Upper Tantallon and Pockwock. These suburban communities are home to many of the city's workers and are situated about 15 miles from Halifax. Residents in nearby neighbourhoods, which are surrounded by forest, were left uneasy throughout the night.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted on Monday that the wildfire situation in the province of Nova Scotia, where Halifax is located, is "incredibly serious", and that his government was ready to provide any assistance if needed.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Deputy Chief Dave Meldrum told reporters on Monday morning the fire burning in the Tantallon and Hammonds Plains area was "ongoing and still not under control." The cause of the fire was still being probed and there were no reports yet of deaths and injuries.

Mr Meldrum added about 100 firefighters were battling the fires overnight. He also said emergency crews had a lot of work to do for "many days" ahead.

The city declared a state of local emergency late on Sunday after the wildfire caused evacuations and power outages, with authorities also shutting several schools in the affected areas.

The wildfire, aided by strong winds and tinder-dry woods, damaged dozens of homes and also hampered rescue services. The state of emergency would be in effect for seven days, unless lifted or extended, the municipality said.

Western Canadian provinces of Alberta, which goes to the polls on Monday, and British Columbia have also been dealing with an unusually warm spring this year that has sparked several out-of-control wildfires, cutting oil and gas production. But most of those fires have since been brought under control, helping oil and gas production to resume.

In the main oil-producing province of Alberta, the intensity of one of the most challenging wildfire seasons in years continued to ease, allowing oil and gas producers to restart production that they had temporarily shut in out of caution.

Crescent Point Energy said it restored the 45,000 barrels of oil equivalent of output it had previously paused, while Paramount Resources said it restored most of the production it had curtailed due to the fires.

What Government Said About 6 Cheetah Deaths In 2 Months

The central government has denied any lapses behind the deaths of six cheetahs - including three cubs - within two months at the Kuno National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh. "There is no lapse behind any of the cheetah deaths. Even in the case of the deaths of the three cheetah cubs, global wildlife literature clearly mentions 90% per cent infant mortality among cheetahs," said an official.

"We haven't done any trials with any of the cheetahs trans-located to KNP from the two African nations. Cheetahs live in a coalition, so even the mating of a female cheetah with a male coalition wasn't done as any trial. It was done based on documented evidence and following clearance from African experts," said CP Goyal, director general of forests.

A female cheetah had died during an aggressive interaction with two male cheetahs.

Union Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav has said that officers and employees involved in cheetah conservation and management will be selected and sent for the study tour to Namibia in South Africa under the Cheetah Project. All possible cooperation including financial resources will be provided by the Central Government for the protection, conservation, promotion, and proposed Cheetah Protection Force.

Mr Yadav had a discussion regarding the Cheetah Project with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, state Forest Minister Dr Vijay Shah, and senior officials of the state government in a high-level meeting in Bhopal. He also chaired the 23rd meeting of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) at the Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM) in Bhopal.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that Madhya Pradesh is a tiger state and it is a matter of prestige. The state government is committed to the success of Project Cheetah, he added.

"Information about the survival rate of birth of cheetah cubs was given at the beginning itself. The entire staff associated with the Cheetah project is working dedicatedly. The progress of the project is satisfactory," Mr Chouhan said.

The Chief Minister also instructed the state forest department that necessary arrangements should be completed on a war footing in the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary for alternative habitats for cheetahs.

Since March 27, three adult cheetahs and three cubs (out of the four cubs born in March) have died at the KNP, causing concern about the success of the ambitious project.
